Why Family Reading is Important

v Quality Time
o   Reading is a great way for families to spend time together without paying astronomical prices for vacations or trips to the movies. Pick a day each week to spend an hour reading aloud with your family, or read a few pages each night over dinner!
v Educational
o   When a child reads with their family, they are more likely to read on their own and the child who develops good reading habits does statistically better in school. The child can learn through reading as well as learn new vocabulary and develop cognitive and intuitive skills that can help them in school. Reading for school is boring and unengaging, but reading with the family is fun and interesting.
v Help Discuss Big Topics
o   Are you unsure how to discuss something difficult with your children? Reading can help! Find a book with similar themes and stories and reach—and teach—your child through reading.
v Fun
o   The biggest reason to read with your family is that it’s fun for everyone! Find a book that your whole family can enjoy and read it aloud. Let a different member of the family choose the book each time so everyone can feel involved. Try making it even more enjoyable by adding voices to the characters when you read or by acting out a scene or two.
